１．スペリング・ブック

ノア・ウェブスター（Noah Webster, 1758-1843）「アメリカの学問・教育の父」。

　彼の編纂した綴字書や辞書は日本の英語教育に多大な影響を与えた。

・ウェブスターの綴字教本はアメリカで聖書に次ぐベストセラー（早川, 2007, p.39）

・本邦でも最も広くWebsterの恩恵を受けているのは、その綴字本で、恐らく明治中期までの英学書生の大半は殆どこの本から入門手ほどきを受けているのではあるまいか。（池田, 1968, p.15）

・ウェブスターの『スペリング・ブック（綴字書）』は明治初期に広く用いられた。読本（リーダー）に入る前に入門書としてまず第一に学ばなければならなかった。英語辞書で有名なウェブスターのあらわした『スペリング・ブック』はアメリカでも広く使用された。英語を学ぶには、まず単語の綴りと発音を覚える必要があったのである。当時はスペルリング・ブックと呼ばれた。日本でも多く翻刻版が出た。（大村ほか, 1980, p.8）

・英語綴字書（ウェブスター氏著にして当時本邦英語教授に際し教科書として初次に読ましめたるものなり）の使用法は、生徒の能力に応じ適宜に文字数を定めて教授し、順読、指読、斉読の方法に依り、後黒板上に摘書して読ましむ。実物あらば之を文字に対照して教授すべし。例へばhat なる文字を教ふるとせんに、先づ生徒に帽子を示して教授するが如し。而して無意義の文字は成るべく省くを宜しとす。一文字を完全に教授したる後は必ず其応用を怠るべからず。今hat なる文字の教授後には必ずI have, You have, he has, 等の文字を教授し置き、hat 又は綴字書中既知の文字を応用して作文せしむべきものとす。高嶺秀夫の「英語綴字書」教授法（明治11 年、東京師範学校）（松村, 1997, p.37）

OF THE BOY THAT STOLE APPLES.

An old man found a rude boy upon one of his trees stealing apples,

and desired him to come down;

but the young sauce-box told him plainly he would not.

"Won't you?" said the old man,

"then I will fetch you down;"

so he pulled up some turf or grass and threw at him;

but this only made the youngster laugh,

to think the old man should pretend to beat him down from the tree with grass only.

"Well, well," said the old man,

"if neither words nor grass will do, I must try what virtue there is in stones;"

so the old man pelted him heartily with stones,

which soon made the young chap hasten down from the tree and beg the old man's pardon.
